Welcome to Makkobilli Law Firm LLP
Founded by partners with a combined professional experience of over 80 years, Makkobilli Law Firm LLP is a full-service Ethiopian law firm that provides end-to-end tailored legal services to businesses ranging from start-ups to large multinational corporations.
There was no comprehensive legal framework for registration of law firms in Ethiopia before 2021, and attorney licenses were being issued only for solo legal practice. With the promulgation of the new Ethiopian Commercial Code and the Federal Advocacy Service Licensing and Administration Proclamation; however, founders of the Firm, who had been independently practicing law for decades as solo attorneys, were able to join together in setting-up a law firm named after an indigenous historical figure – Makko Billi – traditionally known for his wisdom of crafting laws that engineer societal behavior. Makko Billi is also claimed to have been inextricably linked to the development of the concept of “safuu” – a concept that embodies harmony, respect, avoidance, and distance. Through remembering the legacy of Makko Billi and other indigenous Ethiopian jurists, we draw our inspirations for overcoming legal challenges and ethical complexities of the modern and globalized world we live and service our clients in.
